Unprotected documents are not stored on the disk. Modern DRM document access control techologies use the highest strength encryption i.e. AES 256 bit and thus they provide an enhanced system which document owners can use to enforce copyrights over their works by securing all the controls available to the document's recipients.

DRM document access control systems provide a simple but cryptographically secure way of handling customer registration. They involve the transfer of the actual decryption keys to the registered product via secure key exchange protocols, and holding the key in a secure manner prior to its use. Only authorized users can thus receive files and use them, but they cannot transfer their user rights to other computer systems unless authorized. Keystores are locked to specific computers and thus users cannot transfer these to other parties. In essence, the supplier/document owner is guaranteed of his/her revenue stream at all times.
